Early Parent-Child Relationship (3 categories)
  • Concentration on the child
    • Overprotective: parent encourages dependance on the parent and restricts curiosity and exploration
    • Overdemanding: parent requests perfection from the child, asking for excellent performance and setting high standards of behavior (first born)
  • Avoidance of the child
    • Rejection: parent may be overly critical of the child or punish the child excessively
    • Neglect: ignores the child for many reasons, such as, parents concern with their own problems, other children, or work
  • Acceptance of the child
    • Parents encourage independence rather than dependence and do not ignore or reject their child, creating a relatively tension free environment
      • Casual acceptance: parents have a low-key attitude offering a minimum amount of love
      • Loving acceptance: parents offer a warmer attitude toward the child, while not interfering with the child's resources by fostering dependency
In 1956 and 1957, Anne Roe published research on what makes people choose a certain occupation.What is interesting about Roe's research is that she created a personality development theory that is inherently connected to why people choose the jobs that they choose. With her personality development theory, Roe says that people are inherently influenced by their psychological needs they form as children interact with their parents (Richards, 2008). Roe's view on career selection is that people are influenced over time by their parents, environment, genetics, culture, etc. in a way that shapes people's orientation to people or things, interests, skills, and responsibility (Clark College, 2010).
Roe's personality development theory points out several important aspects with parent-child relationships, namely: the emotional concentration, avoidance, and acceptance. A person will most likely go for a work environment that is similar to the one he or she grew up in. According to Roe's theory, there is a relationship between a person's parent-child relations at childhood, occupational choice, and major orientation (White, 2015).
